To begin, agrotourism (or agritourism) brings visitors to a farm or ranch, involving them in all agricultural activities. In different parts of the world, agriturismo has different definitions and could be called farm stay, as in Italy. In the United States, agritourism can include a wide variety of activities, such as buying produce directly from the farm, picking fruit, feeding animals, riding in tractors, or staying in a farm. “Guest room” on a farm.

It exists five categories of agritourism :

    1. Direct sales to consumers (e.g. agricultural kiosks, U-pick)
    2. Agricultural education (for example, school visits to a farm)
    3. Hospitality (overnight stays on a farm)
    4. Leisure (eg. Hunting, horse riding)
    5. Entertainment (eg Hay, harvest dinners)

Agrotourism is considered a kind of niche tourism and a growing industry in many parts of the world, such as Australia, United States, Canada, Philippines and Greece.

Agritourism took its first steps in Europe, Australia and New Zealand, where farmers found a new way to diversify their income. In Italy they called this new business “Agriturismo” and in Britain, Australia and New Zealand it became known as “farm holidays”.

Why is the agriturismo popular?

In recent decades, with the growth of urban planning and the massive importation of various foods, people have become increasingly interested in where and how their food is produced. Not only in their own country, but also around the world. They want to meet with farmers and processors and talk to them about how food is produced.

For many people, especially children, a visit to a farm marks the first time they see the source of their food, whether it is an apple on a tree, a dairy cow, or corn growing in a field. Farmers take advantage of this interest to develop traffic to their farm and educate people about the quality of their products.

Agritourism and ecotourism

Ecotourism is part of agritourism. Depending on where exactly you are staying in Greece, you will have many choices. With its national parks, breathtaking landscapes and wetlands, Greece has one of the richest flora and fauna in Europe. If you like action in nature, don’t miss your favorite sport in the incredible Greek nature, such as swimming, mountaineering, mountain biking, hiking, fishing and horse riding. Wake up each morning to the chirping of birds, have breakfast in the shade of old trees and get ready for the adventures of a new day under the Greek sun.
