Alternative ways of education

In the previous article we talked about both punishment and negative rewards as forms of education. These ways do not achieve the desired results. On the contrary, they often have a negative effect on the child's mentality. So, in spite of this, we come with this article to propose alternative forms of education.

In the previous article we talked about both punishment and negative rewards as forms of education. These ways do not achieve the desired results. On the contrary, they often have a negative effect on the child’s mentality. So, in spite of this, we come with this article to propose alternative forms of education.

Every child is unique

The way in which we approach each child differs depending on his or her personality, character and motivations. The same applies to the effectiveness of the ways of education.

The first approach, which we would be well advised to adopt, is to create in them the need of healthy motivation. Help them to eliminate from their thinking that they are doing things to gain something.

Discussion

Discussion was, is and will be the only way that can lead to healthy solutions and suggestions. Children understand and comprehend everything. A calm tone of voice combined with a calm posture and productive dialogue can bring us one step closer to the desired results. Of course, it is also imperative to develop a sense of empathy from an early age. When children put themselves in the other person’s shoes, they automatically acquire one of the most important skills of their lives. As a consequence, they subsequently avoid many potentially wrong behaviours.

Speaking from my personal experience, I would like to share with you a method that has helped me quite a bit called the “book of thought” that is suitable for slightly older children, from ages 5+. In this book children write down their feelings, thoughts and any ‘offending’ behaviour and understand the mistake themselves, while finding the solution.

Democratic Education

Finally, we could not but emphasise the model of democratic education, which supports children’s freedom and independence, encouragement and cooperation, as well as their participation in the problem-solving process.

In conclusion, we conclude that children deserve to be free from the fear of punishment and the anxious effort to win the trophy of reward. Developing healthy motivation by holistic methods is the key to their education as smoothly as possible. It is very important to always remember to constantly help remind them to embrace their mistakes and learn from them, not carry them guiltily.
